SHARKHUNTERS International
2010 Argentina - Beauty and the Beast?

The beautiful Austrian Hedwig Eva Marie Kiesler

Austrian Arms merchant Fritz Mandl

What could these two possibly have to do with World War Two and South America?  Anyone old enough to remember the movies of the 1940's and 1950's or if you watch the old movies on late night television will know this stunning beauty by her screen name of Hedy Lamaar.  She married Mandl in their native Austria and Fritz once gave her to Hitler for a night - some believe to secure arms contracts.  She left Mandl and emigrated to the United States prior to the war and in addition to becoming a hugely successful movie actress, she also invented some very technical items for the American war effort including remotely guided torpedoes and radio scrambling devices.

But what of Fritz?  During World War Two, Mandl made a huge fortune selling arms to the Reich for their war effort but when Germany lost the war, Fritz did what so many in Europe did - he fled to South America; to Argentina to be precise, where he continued as an arms merchant.  He supplied weapons to South American military forces but primarily to the forces of the best friend of the collapsed Reich - Juan Peṛn.

The fortunes of Mandl grew and grew, and he built palatial mansions throughout South America but his two favorites were here in La Falda and are now upscale, expensive hotels.

Mandl, cigar in hand, watches over his palace   We enter this mansion of Mandl, now an upscale hotel

Looking out the window of the main salon, Mandl could look

far down the mountain into the valley below

Coming down the main staircase in the morning

and through this drawing room,

Mandl, and now the guests, find a

magnificent breakfast spread out for them.

After breakfast, perhaps a cup of coffee in the solarium then a walk

in the garden.  Mandl does not forget where his wealth came from.

Maybe you will want a free photo of Wilibald Volsing here on the left.  He served aboard the battleship TIRPITZ.  Or maybe you would prefer a hand signed photo of Baron Georg von Zirk in this photo to the right.  Georg was a navigator-bombardier on a He-111 until the very last day of the war when his squadron was literally sold to the Soviets and he became a P.O.W.  He escaped Soviet captivity three times and after the last one, he remained free.

These photos and more are available and all are hand signed by veterans.  Click on our emblem above and see them all.

Fritz Mandl had many mansions with many bedrooms.   He had many friends - who slept here 70 years ago?

Looking in any direction from his mansion on the mountaintop,

Fritz Mandl could see for miles in any direction.

Not the shy one, Fritz had his photo everywhere in the mansion.   One last look at this mansion of Mandl, then we depart.
