2012 Sharkhunters "Patrol"
in Northern Germany!

25 through 31 August 2012

It has been a long time - seven long years - since we have been to this part of Germany and we have prepared quite a tour.  Here are some of the highlights of this SEVEN DAY "Patrol"

We visit two very rare submarines.............

The most widely produced submarine ever, some
800 were built and U-995 is the only
Type VII submarine left in the world.
The Type XXI was the world's first true submarine.  1,500 were
planned and hundreds were built but U-2540 is the only
Type XXI boat left in the world.

The U-Boot Ehrenmal is the beautiful Submarine Memorial and this giant eagle overlooks the Memorial and also the Baltic.  Sharkhunters has so far, sent about $6,500 to the Memorial for upkeep, maintenance etc.  The Memorial itself is a curving slash in the ground and every lost boat is listed on a bronze plate with the name of the Skipper whether the Skipper was lost or not, and there are the names of all the men - almost 30,000 young submarine sailors, who were killed in action.  It is a beautiful place - but sad and somber as well.

We visit other interesting and historic places, such as.........

Heinrich Himmler took over this castle where young SS officers
were trained and in the eerie torchlit crypt deep beneath this
tower, they swore their oath.  It is mystical and pure history.
A few hundred yards from the castle stands an old gasthaus that
Himmler took over as the Officers' Club for his SS men.
The divisional emblems are still carved in the walls.

When we visit the Marine Ehrenmal (Navy Memorial, photo left) and go to the observation roof at the top, the view over the Baltic is spectacular!  Inside are the flags that have flown over the German Fleet for the past many centuries.  There are large models of the World War Two German battleships and other 'heavies' such as pocket battleships, cruisers etc.

The photo right is another view of the eagle that watches over the Submarine memorial.  We normally meet with U-Boat vets here for an informal meal - they always have souvenirs we can buy.

It is called the 'Fischmarkt' and it began many years ago as a
fish market along the Elbe River, but it has blossomed into a
mile-long flea market with something for everyone.
What looks like a sleazy honky-tonk is actually - well it actually IS
a sleazy honky-tonk, but it is here that the Beatles first performed
so many years ago, and before they became popular
