2012 Sharkhunters "Patrol"
in Germany and Austria!

9 through 23September 2012

We really love Bavaria and Austria - you cannot take a bad photograph, you cannot get a bad meal or a bad beer here.  The scenery is breathtaking, the people are wonderfully friendly and we participate in an important Memorial service for all who fell in battle.

Here are just some of the highlights of this FIFTEEN DAY "Patrol" but note that we have added...........
GÖRING's CASTLE!
During his time in power, Hermann Göring acquired great wealth in many forms, including many castles around Germany.  Thanks to our good friend MICHAEL KAISER (6166-2000) we will visit this castle and enjoy a meal there.

We visit many more places - some are really OFF LIMITS..........but not to Sharkhunters.

Our walk in the footsteps of history begins in MÜNCHEN; Munich, "Place of the Monks"

After sightseeing, we enjoy lunch at the famous Hofbraühaus.
It was in this building where Hitler held mass meetings in
the third floor great room that held some 800 people.
After an afternoon of shopping on the upscale Maximillian Straße,
we are together for an early dinner at the Löwenbräukeller where
Hitler's followers waited for news on 9 November 1923 of the
success of the "Beer Hall Putsch".

We are usually joined by veterans during this dinner.
Left is Josef "Sepp" Dorsch; 3rd SS
Right is ERWIN BURDT (1328-1898), U-Bootwaffe

"Sepp" Dorsch   GEORG HÖGEL (240-LIFE-1987)

............on to NÜRNBERG

There is so much to see and do in this beautiful city - we can only give you a short overview here.  Naturally we see the places of history on the blossoming of the Third Reich, such as these.........

The Great Stadium at Zeppelnfeld   The place of the "Death Ceremony"

Inside the stadium at the "Golden Room" where Hitler held
receptions before he went outside to make speeches.
One of the two giant braziers that held the massive
flame during the nighttime speeches

The gigantic Congreßhalle - like the Coliseum but much larger   Hitler's personal entrance at the Congreßhalle

It was from this mansion that Julius Streicher published "der Sturmer"   the Luftwaffe Memorial

While in Nürnberg, we enjoy our meals in many unusual places.

This restaurant, 'zum Goldener Stern' opened for business
in the 15th Century - about 70 years BEFORE
Christopher Columbus sailed for the New World
No, the waitress in 'zum Goldener Stern' is not going pour that
dark beer over ED GABRIELSON (4872-LIFE-1996)
.....................but it sure looks that way!

Above and below, left and right - we have lunch in what is called
"Hitler's Train Station" because this is the station where he got
off the train behind the stadium at Zepplenfeld orior to the mass
meetings and his speeches.
The station today looks much like it did in the middle
1930's and they make sure to keep that atmosphere.

MANFRED THORN (7588-LIFE-2011) joined us for lunch and
made his book available to our Members there.  He was with
Peiper's column during the Malmedy situation but as he
explained, the line of march was some twenty miles long
and he was nowhere near the place where the American
troops were shot.  He stood military trial after the war and
was found to be totally blameless in this situation.

He will hand sign his book to you.
It is a great souvenir, and it is in English.

from Hermann Göring -

As mentioned, we will be enjoying a meal at a castle that once belonged to Hermann Göring.

..........and the very special Museums organized by our friend MICHAEL KAISER (6166-LIFE-2000)

We depart beautiful Nürnberg and roll south through southern Bavaria, into the Bavarian Alps then into the Austrian Alps - and right at the side of the Autobahn, we pass the castle that was used in the filming of the movie "Where Eagles Dare".  Into Austria, some of the most magnificant scenery you will ever experience.

Photo left - we enjoy a three-hour boat ride on the beautiful Worthersee then below left and right, we have lunch
in a castle in the clouds.

This is a beautiful area with much to do, but we came here primarily for the Memorial on Ulrichsberg and meeting the veterans.

Remembering fallen comrades

The veterans with their memories

atop this very high mountain

We also enjoy a few evenings if fellowship with the veterans amid folkloric presentations

After five fantastic days in Austria, we roll up the Autobahn for the Obersalzberg.

Our hotel was built some 300 years ago by
a warrior returning from the Turkish wars
The hotel was used by the SS/SD as headquarters
when Hitler was there - his home was 100 yards away

As the war was going badly for Germany, a maze of tunnels
was built through this mountain with connecting openings at the
homes of Hitler, Göring, Bormann, Speer and may other
structures on the mountain.  These photos are taken about
100 meters deep in the mountain.  We will be in these tunnels.

Escape door from Hitler's Bunker   Escape door from Bormann's bunker

We are at the historic Kehlsteinhaus

better known as the Eagle's Nest in time for lunch

The village of Berchtesgaden
is so quaint, it looks as if it
has fallen off a post card.

We return to München in time for Oktoberfest - a fantastic time if you enjoy good food and good beer.
