SHARKHUNTERS International
2017 "Southern Patrol"

On the trail of 3rd Reich World War Two History
Königsee and the Eagle's Nest

It was called the Eagle's Nest but when it was built in 1939 for Adolf Hitler's birthday under orders of Martin Bormann, it was known at the 'Kehlsteinhaus" or the House on Kehlstein Mountain.  Come with us as we walk through history.

Both above - we always like to see where we eat and this is the breakfast room in our hotel in Berchtesgaden.

Right - behind this door is the diesel engine from a U-Boat that supplies emergency power if the main circuit fails.  We were in this room once and they ran the engine for us.

Below right - the separate door and elevator that was used by the guards, servants etc, to go to the top.  Only the VIP's could use the glamorous cooper lined elevator.

Below left - we are very high on the mountain and this is where people who ride their bicycle up the mountain park.  They are either very tough or very crazy!  It is a long way up.

Above left - the long tunnel from the parking lot to the copper lined elevator.  The high-ranking people of the 3rd Reich walked through this tunnel decades ago.

Above right - the red Italian marble fireplace, a gift from Mussolini for Hitler's 50th birthday.

Left - breathtaking does not begin to describe the scenery.

Both below - this is the main salon where Hitler entertained important guests; now it is a restaurant and we are eating.

Above left - the path leading up from the Eagle's Nest to the Memorial at the highest point.

Above right - if you know where to look and if you are sure footed and if you take risks to see important things, you go around this barricade.

Right and below left - these are the foundations for various anti-aircraft guns once mounted here.  Col. BERNHARD FRANK, Member #3225 was in command of the defenses.

Below right - if you slip or make the slightest misstep, you have a very long way to fall - plenty of time to wish you had not gone around the barricade.

As you note, the scenery is incredible!  Now let's go to the Königsee.....

Königsee means 'The King's Lake' and it sure was good to be the King!

Above left - they keep the boats in these docks

Above right - we pass a small monument

Left.....and a little footbridge

Below left - we pass another of the fleet

Below right - YEVGENIY KUZNETSOV, Member #8158 appears to be having a great time.

Above left - this fellow plays the flugelhorn (badly) so we can hear the notes echo back to us from the mountains above right and also right.  There are usually three echoes bouncing back.  Until a few years ago they fired a pistol and seven echoes bounced back but in this kinder, gentler society - guns are apparently taboo.

Below right - we are walking to a little restaurant here in the wilderness for refreshments

Below left - fantastic scenery to be sure

We will be uploading photos daily so please check back to see them all.
