SHARKHUNTERS International
2017 "Southern Patrol"

On the trail of 3rd Reich World War Two History

Mondsee; Private Area for the Waffen
SS

Mondsee - translated, Moon Lake, sits nestled in a beautiful, narrow valley in Austria and during the war, this was set aside for the Waffen SS.  They came here for R&R and their wounded comrades were brought here for recovery.

Photo left - our beautiful hotel overlooking Mondsee.

Both below - the view of the lake from our balcony.

On the right - does this cathedral look familiar?  It should if you saw the movie "The Sound of Music" because it was in this very cathedral where they filmed the wedding ceremony.

Now let's begin our drive around the lake.

Below left - a beautiful overview.

Below right - YEVGENIY and his dad Georgi are enjoying their time here.

Both above - 'Steinkreuz'..........yes, there is a story here and we learned it from our friend 'Michael'.

Georgi perhaps contemplating the story of 'Steinkreuz'.

Above left - this had been a hospital for wounded Waffen SS soldiers.

Below right - we paused at a quaint little lakefront restaurant and naturally, I enjoyed my favorite Austrian dish - Heiße Liebe, the vanilla ice cream with hot raspberries and whipped cream.

Once we are rested, we are ready to continue onward in this beautiful area.

We stopped for lunch - look at this fantastic scenery as the clouds are rolling up the mountainside.  Inside, there is great food, beautifully presented but the smiling (?????) manager quickly yelled "No photos!" so we put the camera away.

Our next visit is the oldest wooden church in Austria.

Above left - a shrine at a crossroad

Above right - the old wooden church

Right - in the old Celtic manner, the yellow arrow shows the emblem for birth (he rises from the earth) and the blue arrow shows the emblem for death (he returns to the earth).

Both below - they remember the young men of this congregation who did not return from the war.

Above are photos inside this old wooden church and outside there is a shrine.

With all these little shrines at practically every crossroads in the countryside, small churches like this little wooden church, magnificent cathedrals and everything between - it is really hard to believe the old story that these were all godless Nazis.  Could it be that we were lied to?  Below are just some random photos inside the cathedral where the wedding ceremony was filmed for "The Sound of Music".
