Korvettenkapitän
Kurt Baberg
Skipper of U-30,
U-618 & U-827
Member #270-1987
KURT BABERG commanded U-30 in
training and he commanded U-827 for one month at the end of the war, so
it was U-618 with which he made his Feindfahrten (war patrols); April
1942 through May 1944. He had good success during the war and was
decorated with the
Deutsches Kreuz in Gold
for bravery.
Many years after the war when the book and movie "das Boot" was
released, KURT BABERG teamed up with Captain KARL-FRIEDERICH MERTEN to write a
book entitled:
"Nein!
So was das nicht!"
which means "No!
It was not this way!"
The subtitle was 'eine anti-Buchheim schrift' or 'an anti-Buchheim
writing'. In this book, they dispute much of what Buchheim wrote in this
book. Most U-Bootfahrer did not like what Buchheim wrote in this book and
they were furious about what Buchheim wrote in his next book, which contained a
great many insults against Großadmiral Karl Dönitz.

KURT BABERG was a fine man with a good heart. He was with our First Annual
Convention which was February 1987 in Key Largo, Florida. When my son Sean
was born in November of 1987, KURT sent a nice card which read:
"Our heartiest congratulations
on the launching of
your new small 'sailor
with periscope'."
He also sent a very nice present for little Sean - it was a real Kriegsmarine
towel off his boat. We have a great photo of Sean at 2 months of age on
this towel and naturally, we still have the towel.
