 "Jupp" KASSEL was a Funkmaat (Radio Petty Officer) and while other radiomen would tell on which boat they served, when asked about his service, "Jupp" would beam with pride and say "I was Otto Kretschmer's radioman on all patrols!"

He was very proud to have served with the best, and like the others of the crew of U-99, he had the greatest respect for "Silent" Otto.

"Jupp" was the man who helped us obtain the 250 prints of U-99 vs. the heavy merchant cruisers LAURENTIC and PATROCLEUS that were all hand-signed by OTTO KRETSCHMER (122-1985).  We miss "Jupp's" wonderful sense of humor.
