award of the Knights Cross

Born on 1 April 1909 in Hamburg, SCHUHART was in Naval Class 1929 and he commanded U-29 and was decorated with the
Knights Cross.

SCHUHART sank about a dozen ships with a total tonnage of more than 80,000 tons, his most memorable accomplishment came on the night of 17 September 1939 when he came upon a naval task force consisting of the 22,500 ton aircraft carrier HMS COURAGEOUS with four destroyers escorting her and a defensive air cover overhead.  He maneuvered into the correct attack position and fired the four forward tubes, dealing a fatal blow to the carrier.  The destroyers quickly attacked U-29 with depth charges, but to no effect.  The carrier was lost and the U-Boat escaped.

His final posting during the war was that as Commander, I Section, Naval Academy at Flensburg/Mürwik.
