"Mackey" STEINHOFF was decorated with many honors including one of the very few to be decorated with the
Knights Cross with Oak Leaf and Sword.

He flew more than 930 combat missions and had 176 confirmed aerial victories.  He served on all fronts including the Eastern Front, Africa and Sicily.  He even wrote a book entitled (translated) "
The Road to Messina - the Commander's Logbook
".  In the closing months of the war, he served in JV 44, the famed "Squadron of Experts" flying the new Me 262 jet fighter.  He scored 6 victories with his jet fighter before being badly burned in a crash.

In 1956 when Germany began to rebuild their armed forces, he joined the new Luftwaffe and in 1966, became Inspecteuer General der Luftwaffe (Air Force Chief of Staff) and Chairman of the NATO Military Committee.

General STEINHOFF was a good and supportive Member of Sharkhunters and we were in contact for some years before his passing.
