SHARKHUNTERS International
Northern Patrol 2012
Sunday 26 August

the Fischmarkt (the Fish Market)
Initially this was a fish market where the fishermen would put in along the banks of the Elbe to sell their catch.  Over the years it grew and grew until it is now a huge flea market with goods from all over Europe featuring food, snacks, souvenirs and even fish.  For some reason, one of the big sellers are T-shirts with the image of 'Che' Guevara on them.  Go figure.

The hardy Sharkhunters fought off their jet lag and mustered before 0600 for the walk to the riverfront of the Elbe and enjoyed souvenir shopping at the Fischmarkt as the sun was breaking over the city.

There were many places to get snacks...

....and hot coffee

    Hamburg is waking up

After a stop for breakfast and to the hotel for a rest, we then set out with full crew for the Russian TANGO Class submarine at the banks of the Elbe.  The TANGO was the largest non-nuclear submarine ever built in quantity but despite its enormous size, crew comfort and indeed, space of any kind, was badly lacking in this boat.  ERWIN BURDT (1328-1989) was crewman aboard U-733, a Type VII-C boat and he also went aboard a Type XXI boat in the last weeks of the war and he said that this TANGO was incredibly lacking in space for the crew.

Who is hiding here?  It is the cook from Red October???   Spare prop - kinda' like a spare tire?

All the comforts of home.  Well, if your home is in a barn in Siberia.

BELOW - Lunch anyone?  No thanks!!  Is there a McDonalds nearby?

The officers had it a little better than the men

On the way back to the HQ hotel we stopped for beer and ice cream.  Most of the group had beer while COOPER had ice cream - again.

In the evening the group walked to a nice Italian Trattoria near the HQ hotel.  For some reason, Germany is full of Italian restaurants.

PEPPERONI!  I want pepperoni not peppers on my pizza!   He wants pepperoni?  Call Guido the knuckle-dragger.

Guido the knuckle-dragger is on his way   Okay, okay.........I'll enjoy the pizza

This is all in fun.  We had a great meal and returned several times.

Are you kicking yourself yet for not being with us?  Keep looking............you soon will be.
