Kapitšnleutnant GERD KELBLING
Kriegsmarine, U-Bootwaffe Commander U-593
GERD KELBLING began on minesweepers in the Baltic and the North
Sea before transferring to the U-Bootwaffe in 1941.
23 October 1041 he put U-593 in commission. His
first attack on an enemy vessel came in mid-October when he torpedoed a
Greek steamer which was later captured. He attacked and sank other
ships including on 25 May 1942 when the 8,426 ton Panamanian steamer
PERSEPHONE went down.
Late in 1942 he broke through Gibraltar into the Mediterranean where he
continued his run of successes. On 19 August 1943 he was decorated with the Knights
On 12 December 1943 the destroyers TYNDALE and
HOLCOMBE attacked U-593 but they were sunk
instead. However, on 31 December 1943 they were attacked and sunk
off Algiers by British ASW vessels. Kelbling and some of the crew
were rescued and taken prisoner.
