SHARKHUNTERS International
Kapitšnleutnant GERD  KELBLING  #6155-2000
Kriegsmarine, U-Bootwaffe     Commander U-593

GERD KELBLING began on minesweepers in the Baltic and the North Sea before transferring to the U-Bootwaffe in 1941.

23 October 1041 he put U-593 in commission.  His first attack on an enemy vessel came in mid-October when he torpedoed a Greek steamer which was later captured.  He attacked and sank other ships including on 25 May 1942 when the 8,426 ton Panamanian steamer PERSEPHONE went down.

Late in 1942 he broke through Gibraltar into the Mediterranean where he continued his run of successes.  On 19 August 1943 he was decorated with the Knights Cross.

On 12 December 1943 the destroyers TYNDALE and HOLCOMBE attacked U-593 but they were sunk instead.  However, on 31 December 1943 they were attacked and sunk off Algiers by British ASW vessels.  Kelbling and some of the crew were rescued and taken prisoner.
