Australia, Lieutenant Commander RAN
joined the Royal Australian Navy at age 16 as a Junior Recruit and his
training began at HMAS LEEUWIN where he qualified as a
Radar Plot rating and later as an Acoustic Warfare Analyst and
Navigators Yeoman. He was posted to HMAS SUPPLY (AO-195).
He then qualified as a Ships Diver and then posted to Royal Navy
Submarine School at HMS DOLPHIN in the UK. He
qualified for his Dolphins while serving aboard HMS ONSLOW
(SSG-60). After serving on all the OBERON
Class submarines, he was Chief Coxswain (Chief of the Boat) aboard
HMAS OTAMA (SSG-72) and he also served as Chief
Coxswain at the SubBase HMAS PLATYPUS where he instructed
at the Submarine School and served in the Sea Training Group.
After completing Special Duties Officers courses at Royal Navy College
HMAS CRESWELL he was commissioned as an officer and he
qualified as an officer aboard HMAS OXLEY (SSG-57)
while in Singapore. Wishing to broaden his career he was posted to
the hydrographic ships HMAS FLINDERS (A-312)
as Navigation Officer and HMAS MERMAID (A-02)
as Executive Officer.
After more training courses, he was posted as Warfare Officer aboard
HMAS OTWAY (SSG-59) and later was posted as XO
of that submarine. After that boat was decommissioned he was posted as
Staff Officer to the Director of Submarine Policy & Warfare then to
Maritime HQ in Sydney as Training Coordinator for Submarines.
He was then posted as XO aboard the patrol boat HMAS GAWLER
(PB-212) then posted to the Royal Australian Navy College
as Sea Training Officer and Officer in Command of the training vessel
SEAHORSE HORIZON (ex HMAS PROTECTOR ASR-241).
GEORGE has enjoyed a stellar career
in the RAN and served in more positions and aboard more ships than we have room
on this page. His youngest brother (Brett) has been in the RAN more than
ten years and is now an officer. GEORGE's second son (Thomas) is an
Electronics Tech in the RAN.
