SHARKHUNTERS Salutes Veterans

PAUL  SENGHAS  (4075-1994)
Hauptsturmführer, Waffen SS

 

PAUL SENGHAS participated in the Polish Campagne and the Battle of France where he was awarded the Iron Cross Second Class in June 1940.

     When the new SS Viking Division was formed he was posted in as Scharführer (Staff Sergeant) and took part in Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union where he was awarded the Iron Cross First Class in December 1941 then the Deutsches Kreus in Gold in June 1943 after destroying more than thirty tanks.  He was then selected to become an officer and was promoted to Untersturmführer (2nd Lieutenant) in July 1943.

   He was awarded the Knight's Cross in December 1944 for his outstanding personal bravery 1944 while in command of the 1st Company, 5th SS Panzer Regiment Viking.  Finally he destroyed 49 tanks.

   He was severely wounded in April 1945 and evacuated to hospital at Warendorf where he was captured by the advancing American forces. He remained in captivity until June 1946 when he was released.
