GEORGE  H.  W.  BUSH  (4116-1995)
United States Navy, WW II Combat Pilot

photo left - GEORGE with his flight crew on the deck of USS SAN JACINTO before a flight.  photo right - BUSH being picked up by USS FINBACK (SS 230) off the island of Chichi Jima.  As he was bobbing in the water a couple miles off this Japanese held island, BUSH saw the small boat set out from the island to pick him up when the water around him boiled and the submarine surfaced to take him aboard.  FINBACK was one of the submarines on 'Lifeguard' duty, to pick up any downed American aircrews who were shot down.

FINBACK not only saved BUSH from being a Prisoner of War, but although he didn't know it at the time, saved him from being the 'Guest of Honor' at a Japanese banquet on the island.  The Japanese camp commandant previously had downed American fliers butchered, cooked and served to his men on the island - and that fate awaited BUSH if FINBACK had not rescued him!  After the war, this commandant was tried for war crimes and executed.
