ERNST BARKMANN was one of the top tank commanders in the war, having destroyed more than 100 enemy tanks.  While most of his actions were against the Soviet Army and he destroyed a huge number of T-34 tanks, probably his most famous action was the one dubbed "Barkmann's Corner" wherein he was in battle with a dozen of so American tanks supported by P-47 fighter-bombers.  He destroyed many of the American tanks and despite his own tank being badly damaged, made it back to his unit.

The list of his medals and awards is extensive.  After the war he returned to his village where he was mayor for a while but most of his life was spent as the Fire Chief there in Kisdorf.

This photo was shot during a Sharkhunters "Patrol" in southern Germany and Austria.  This was shot on Ulrichsberg just after the ceremonies concluded wherein all who fell in battle were remembered, no matter what uniform they wore.  The photo was named "Two Knights" because both HESS and BARKMANN were decorated with the Knights Cross.
