Oberleutnant
zur See
Günther Heinrich
While commanding U-960, Heinrich had two war patrols in the Arctic
Sea, operating against the Murmansk Convoys, two more in the North
Atlantic. During his war patrols, he sank five ships including a Soviet
minesweeper, a Liberty Ships (SS SUMNER I. KIMBALL) named for the
founder of the United States Coast Guard - and the American destroyer USS
ELLYSON.
The most remarkable feat during Günther Heinrich's time commanding U-960
was the fact that this was THE LAST German
U-Boat to successfully transit the "Gates of
Hell".....the Straits of Gibraltar. All other German
U-Boats making this attempt after U-960 were either destroyed or
driven back.
