CHINA - 1992
TAPE H-20

Our National Guide (Anna) at                   We ate well at every meal                               Street in Penglai
    the Dalian shipyard

On our second week in China, we were aboard many warships - including one destroyer that was not on the tour (lots of fun and excitement there!).

We were expected, welcome and authorized to            We were NOT expected or authorized to be aboard
tour these ships.  We had a great time.                      this warship - but there goes President Harry Cooper
followed by Member Lewis Twine.  So far - so good!

They videotaped this destroyer from stem to stern, above and below decks - weapons systems and all

They took videotape all through the bridge, the CiC (never allowed on anyone's ship), through the gun tubs, through the SILKWORM missile batteries, through the crew's quarters and into the Officer's wardroom.  That's where they came face to face with a short Rear Admiral and a tall Captain who, upon seeing two westerners with a camcorder on their ship, damn near choked on their tea and then began yelling things in Chinese which probably was not 'Welcome Aboard'!  Along came Anna....

Anna explains to the Admiral that we are an             All smiles and 'Welcome Aboard!' now. From left, the
important delegation from America.                          short Admiral, the tall Captain, Chinese sailor and
Sharkhunters President Harry Cooper with camcorder.

You will sit in on the open discussion between our Members and the Commander of the East Sea (Yellow Sea) Navy.  You will be at the formal banquet they hosted for us.  You will be with us as we ride up the Whang-Po River aboard the Admiral's personal barge.

Harry Cooper (L) with our host, Admiral                    We toured these ASW ships before our discussion
Victory Wu (center).                                                 and formal banquet.

We were allowed to tape and photograph anything we wanted - including the riotously funny 'commercial' for Whang-Pi beer filmed by two of our group.....who had been liberally sampling the product!  We laughed to hard we cried during this segment.  You will too.

Major Dick Smith (US Army pilot) just could               Commander Steve Jones (US Navy, submarines) in
