Otto Kretschmer and U-99
Tape H-36

Three photos of Flotillen Admiral Otto Kretschmer.  Photo on the right was taken at the ceremony when the 'Kretschmer Marsch' was dedicated.  The flowers were handed to him by Fraulein von Ribbentrop.

This is a great tape!  It begins with German newsreel footage of "Silent" Otto Kretschmer returning from patrol and being greeted by Karl Dönitz.  Pennants fluttering in the breeze - another successful patrol by the boat of the 'Golden Horseshoe'.  A lot of combat action in this tape, right from on board cameras that went along on patrols.  Some of these scenes have never been seen before.

This photo is the 'indienstellung', or the                 Crew photo aboard U-99
       commissioning of U-99.  Kretschmer is
       the second from the right.

There is quite a bit of combat footage in the opening portion of the tape, bands playing and the girls handing out flowers then there are multitudes of interviews and explanations by veterans of both sides.

This tape is pure history and contains information you won’t find anywhere else.

Putting the famed 'Golden Horseshoe'       Otto Kretschmer with his
on the tower of U-99.  Unlike the             Knights Cross, Oak Leaf and
other boats, this was not a painted            Crossed Swords.  By the time
emblem but an actual horseshoe that          he had received this decoration,
came up in the anchor.  The crew               Otto was already 'guest of the
cleaned it up, painted it gold, and              King' in England then Canada.
        screwed it onto the tower.
