Detlev
Zimmermann Interview - 1992
Tape H-48
Detlev
Zimmermann was diving planesman on U-315 when that boat was caught
in an anti-submarine net at the entrance to the Kola Bay in 1944.
Their mission was to penetrate the harbor and repeat the feat of U-47
in Scapa Flow in 1939. There was a
Russian battleship in the harbor – the ARCHANGELSK, the former
British HMS ROYAL SOVEREIGN – and they were to sink it for the
propaganda value. It didn’t work, the boat was nearly lost and the Skipper
almost got court-martialled.
Detlev is a technical-oriented guy and he served and worked on systems inside
the boat, so his tape contains a lot of technical information on how various
systems work in the U-boat.
