Hans-Georg
Hess
Interview - 1994
Tape H-58
Oberleutnant
zur See der Reserve Hans-Georg Hess was the youngest combat submarine
commander of World War II, possibly of all time, having received command of U-995
a few months past his 21st birthday.
He earned the Knights Cross
and completed half a dozen successful patrols at a time when U-boats almost
never returned from even their first war patrol.
Hess speaks of the time he and GrossAdmiral Dönitz rode in a staff car from
Berlin to Flensburg and talks about the Admiral’s hope that the Allies would
join with Germany against the Soviet Union and drive the Russians out of Europe.
What was the reply from Hess? How
did Hess manage to come home from all those patrols at a time when U-boats were
usually sunk on their first patrol – and he managed to sink ships too!
It’s all on this tape.
This was part of the 7 Skippers tape, which is no longer available.
