with Günther Prien – Tape H-6
This
tape begins with clips of life in Germany at the outbreak of WW II (October
1939) but the tape also includes the triumphal return of Günther Prien and his
crew after sinking the battleship HMS ROYAL OAK. You will
see U-47 sailing past the cruiser EMDEN as Prien
returns to port; then watch him and his crew arrive in Berlin on a four-motor
plane along with high-ranking Kriegsmarine officers, for their decorations and
awards.You'll see the Heroes Parade through the streets of Berlin, Prien's crew proudly shows off new U-Bootskriegsabzeichen (Submarine Combat Badges) for the cameras; then Prien makes his speech, wearing his new KNIGHTS CROSS around his neck as his officers look on. This was the first and only Knights Cross awarded to anyone in the U-Bootwaffe in 1939.
