Kolberg
Tape H-75
This
film depicts the brave stand by the people of Kolberg, a small German town on
the Baltic Sea (now known as Kolobrzeg in Poland) against the armies of Napoleon
centuries ago. General Anton
von Gneisenau was the hero of this story, in which the mayor of the town wanted
to surrender and throw himself (and his townspeople) on the mercy of
Napoleon. However, General von Gneisenau rallied the people and stood
fast.
What is so interesting about this film is that it was commissioned in June 1942
by Adolf Hitler. It was his
thinking to show this famous battle in German history in an effort to spur the
populace on to continue the fight until Germany would win the final victory in
World War II.
The scenes of opulent palaces, fine dress and lifestyle of that era are
carefully recreated and put the real life atmosphere into the tape.
