We went back to Germany in 2000 and shot more interviews with veterans of the U-boat wars.  Leutnant zur See HORST von SCHROETER was II.W.O. of U-123 under HARDEGEN and after the two American patrols, he took over command of the boat.

A highly competent Skipper, vom SCHROETER earned the Knights Cross.  He shipped aboard again when the new German Navy was born in the middle 1950’s, and ultimately retired with the rank of Vize Admiral.  This is the highest rank attained by any of the WW II U-bootfahrer in the post-war Bundsmarine.
