                 Type XXIII

The Type XXIII German U-boat was a coastal version of the larger Type XXI U-Boat in that they were built in sections elsewhere and the sections shipped to a central assembly plant.  Further, they had the same inverted 'figure 8' hull design and much larger battery capacity than other small, coastal boats.  This was the first of the German U-Boats in which there was not enough space internally for torpedo reloads, so all torpedoes were loaded externally when the boat was in port.  The modern-day German submarines of the 205, 206, 206A and 212 Class are all loaded externally in much the same way as the World War II Type XXIII coastal U-Boats.  Since there were no follow-on variants, there was no Type XXIII-A; just the Type XXIII.
